Summer graduation at Ilisimatusarfik
During Covid-19, it is not business as usual - but naturally we celebrated this summer’s graduates from Ilisimatusarfik.
The graduation took place today, Tuesday 23 June 2020, from 10.00 - 11.00 in the canteen at campus Ilimmarfik.
However, the graduation was only for our graduates - i.e., unfortunately without any guests.
The graduation was therefore live streamed .. so that family, friends, etc. could follow from home.
After the official graduation, each degree programme hosted a standing Kaffemik.
Below, you can read rector Gitte Adler Reimer's graduation speech.
Congratulations on finishing your education.
If any, you have deserved a huge congratulation - and you are graduating under very special circumstances.
Because of Covid-19, Ilisimatusarfik closed down on 18 March, and among other things, this meant that all teaching was changed into either self-study or online teaching - just as many of our exams have been held online.
But, all of you have shown great understanding and patience.
Thank you and everyone at Ilisimatusarfik for this.
From one day to the next, we had to suddenly change our whole way of teaching .. we had to change our whole way of working as a university.
But both students and staff have continued to work faithfully - and thank you very much for that.
In that connection, I would also like to thank Naalakkersuisut for their great efforts against Covid-19.
The authorities' professional way of dealing with the crisis situation enabled us to reopen on 27 April.
We should feel very privileged.
Around the world, many universities remain closed, and their gradual opening is not until the coming fall.
That is why I feel we are extra fortunate today, when we can host our summer graduation and celebrate our new bachelor graduates and master graduates. Notwithstanding the fact that we have to do it differently than we are used to.
Dear graduates - Covid-19 or not - you have now reached a major and important step in your life. You are facing a great new and exciting chapter in your life.
Today, we celebrate 56 graduates:
54 bachelor graduates:
- 35 teachers
- 5 nurses
- 2 from Social Science
- 9 from Business Economics
- 3 journalists
2 master graduates:
- 1 from Language, Literature & Media
- 1 from Social Science
But even though you have finished all your exams and are getting your diplomas today, only bigger and more exciting things are waiting ahead.
Remember to use everything your education has taught you as you enter into the job market.
Here, you should not be afraid to use your new knowledge. You have learned to think critically. You have learned to work with solutions - and now it is important that you also dare to show that you can use it in practice.
The labour market really needs precisely the skills that you now have.
I would like to end by again congratulating you and your families - also with your great results.
We wish you all the best of luck.
At the same time, it is also a big congratulation to Greenland and Ilisimatusarfik for all our newly graduated bachelors and masters."
