Ilisimatusarfik's Annual Celebration 2021
Annual Celebration 2021
Ilisimatusarfik hosted its traditional annual celebration on 24 September, where the university was celebrated.
At the annual celebration, Aqqaluk Lynge was awarded Ilisimatusarfik's honorary doctorate for his many years of work for the people of Greenland both nationally and internationally.
Aqqaluk Lynge was honoured in speeches in which, among other things, this quote from Qivioq Løvstrøm, one of the youngest employees at the Institute of Culture, Language & History, put into words Aqqaluk Lynge's significance for her generation:
"Aqqaluk qasujaalluni Kalaallit, Nunallu Inoqqaavisa pisinnaatitaaffii sorsuutigisimavai, oqallorissusinilu atorluarlugu uummatit, matut aqqutillu matoqqasimasut ammartarsimallugit. Namminiilivinnermut aqqut naggorissarsimavaa sorlagut nukittorsarlugit kusanartumik sikkersinnaanngortilluta".
"With the power of his words, Aqqaluk has fought tirelessly for Kalaallit and indigenous rights, and has opened many closed hearts, doors and paths with his powers of speech. He has fertilized the soil for independence and strengthened our roots so that we can flourish".
Ilisimatusarfik is also proud to award four PhD degrees at this year's annual celebration. The four PhD candidates are:
- Mariekathrine Poppel: "Mænds vold mod kvinder i samliv" ("Men's violence against women")
- Naja Carina Steenholdt: "Subjective Well-being and Quality of Life in Greenland"
- Mitdlarak Lennert: "The administrative context of the Greenland primary and lower secondary school system - a governance system misaligned with learning"
- Bonnie Jensen: "Barndomshjem eller børnehjem? - Et kvalitativt studie af 38 børns oplevelser af at blive og være anbragt på døgninstitution i Grønland" ("Childhood home or orphanage? - A qualitative study of 38 children's experiences of staying and being placed in a 24-hour care centre in Greenland").
This year's keynote speaker was Bodil Marie Damgaard of Greenland Holding, who in her speech focused on the important cooperation between research and industry, and how we can and should use each other better.
Rector of Ilisimatusarfik, Gitte Adler Reimer, hosted the event and used her welcome speech to focus on all that Ilisimatusarfik has achieved in the past year: a larger intake of students than ever before, and the establishment of several new research centres focusing on important areas such as security policy and language.
