Clear messages from language policy workshops at Ilisimatusarfik

On 17 – 19 September 2019, Ilisimatusarfik organized workshops for both staff and students. The topic of the workshops was language policy for Ilisimatusarfik, and the messages from both staff and students are clear.

Staff and students at Ilisimatusarfik agree that Ilisimatusarfik, as the country's highest educational institution, and as a workplace and research institution, needs both the Greenlandic, Danish and English languages. Because of this, the language policy is to be inclusive, rather than exclusionary.

Irrespective of their linguistic background, staff and students at Ilisimatusarfik seek a language tolerance, primarily in regards to the Greenlandic language, which according to their statements is sometimes overlooked.

Participants at the workshops indicate that all three languages (i.e. Greenlandic, Danish and English) are equally important. The three languages are a resource that should not be problematised.

Rector at Ilisimatusarfik, Gitte Adler Reimer states: "Inputs from staff and students during the workshops provide a basis for our further work in formulating a language policy for Ilisimatusarfik".
