Visiting scholar program
Visiting scholar: a non-salaried researcher from another institution who visits Ilisimatusarfik to research or participate in research pertaining to Greenland or the Arctic
Ilisimatusarfik - University of Greenland - is happy to welcome international researchers in Ilisimatusarfiks fields of research.
There is, however, an expectation that visiting scholars at Ilisimatusarfik contribute to Ilisimatusarfik, by disseminating their knowledge and research to the benefit of either students and researchers at Ilisimatusarfik or Greenlandic society.
Visiting scholars are therefore expected to participate in knowledge-disseminating activities, be part of a research project connected to Ilisimatusarfik, or pay a bench fee to be acknowledged as visiting scholars at Ilisimatusarfik.
Thus, there are two requirements to being accepted as a visiting scholar at Ilisimatusarfik:

To be approved as a visiting scholar, you must be endorsed by a head of department at Ilisimatusarfik. If you already have an endorsement, please attach it.
If you do not already have an endorsement, your approval as a visiting scholar is contingent on your application being approved by one of Ilisimatusarfik’s departments. Your approval as a visiting scholar is therefore also contingent on the department having the resources to accommodate your stay during the requested period.
Important: visiting scholars must make themselves acquainted with the ethical guidelines for research in Greenland.
It is furthermore seen as self-evident that visiting scholars wishing to gather data from either Ilisimatusarfik employees or students must get informed consent from the interviewees.
When judging whether to endorse a visiting scholar, Ilisimatusarfik’s departments are to take the following into consideration:
- Is the researcher professionally relevant to the department?
- Is the researcher able to provide teaching activities which easily fit the semester plans?
- Is the researcher's research area of high relevance to the department, and will there be a specific, professional benefit to the department by interacting or networking with the researcher?
- Does the department have the resources to accommodate the researcher at the requested time?
- Does the head of the department or employees at the department have time to receive the researcher, show them around and make sure they get access to campus for the duration of the requested stay?
- Is office space available for the researcher at the requested time?
Before endorsing an international researcher as a visiting scholar, the department must also inform the head of institute about the endorsement.
When receiving a visiting scholar, the department is also supposed to make sure that the International Arctic Hub is introduced.
There are no deadlines for applying to be a visiting scholar at Ilisimatusarfik.
Please be aware, however, that the teaching schedules of Ilisimatusarfik’s semesters are usually planned one year in advance. Consequently, if you are planning to offer teaching services as part of your stay, we recommend that you apply at least one year in advance.
Some teaching activities might be able to fit semester plans on short notice - but the likeliness of being approved as a visiting scholar when offering teaching activities improves the earlier Ilisimatusarfik receives the application.
