The Translation & Interpreting programme celebrates its 10th anniversary

In 2012, the first students of the newly created bachelor's programme in Translation & Interpreting were welcomed at Ilisimatusarfik. This also means that the programme can now celebrate its 10th anniversary.

A lot has happened since then, the curriculum has been adjusted several times, and more and more new students have been admitted every year. This is particularly gratifying, as there is a great need for skilled translators and interpreters throughout Greenlandic society. In total, about 35 students have graduated from Ilisimatusarfik with a bachelor's degree in translation and interpreting since the start of the programme - the first in February 2016.

In addition to the permanent teaching staff at the Department of Translation & Interpreting, use is made of external lecturers, both local and visiting, and both public and private companies play a major role in the compulsory traineeship. "We owe both current and former employees a very big thank you for their efforts in getting the programme off the ground", says Head of Department Laila H. Pedersen - and adds "Without the cooperation with companies and lecturers from Greenland and Denmark, we would not be able to run the programme, and we are very happy for the close cooperation with them".

However, after 10 years, it is time to give the programme a thorough overhaul. Work began in earnest in spring 2022 with a workshop attended by stakeholders, alumni and students, who came up with suggestions and wishes for the future shape of the programme. The work will continue in the coming year with an expectation that a new curriculum will be ready in November 2023 - this curriculum will apply to students admitted from 2024 onwards.
