Nick Duelund wins Paasisavut 2023
On the 1st of March 2023, the first edition of the final in the PhD contest Paasisavut went underway – and the final was held in Katuaq in front of 400 audience members, while being transmitted live on KNR TV
The contest has long been in the making - and has been signified by a fantastic cooperation between Ilisimatusarfik and Arctic Hub.
The Paasisavut finalists were:
Ulunnguaq Markussen: Greenland is a country under constant change, especially when it comes to developments of the Greenlandic towns and rural areas. But how can we secure that the developments occur under the best circumstances? Is the best solution found at the national or local level of governance?
Nick Duelund: Our sight is one of the most important things that we as humans utilize in our daily lives. But how can Greenland make sure that children are screened and tested for potential problems, and thereafter given the necessary tools to regain their function of sight?
Naja Carina Steenholdt: Statistics paint a dark picture of life in Greenland; social issues and negative aspects are often the focal points. But how does this coincide with the fact that many people are satisfied with their lives? Are there some aspects of Greenlandic society that are given more emphasis?
Laura Helene Rasmussen: What are the precise consequences of the continued rise in temperature in Greenland? Laura is currently studying the release of Carbon dioxide in the tundra through the summer and winter, now and in the future. Will the Greenlandic tundra release more CO2 that resides in the permafrost than it absorbs through the tundra's flora in the future?
Elizabeth Cooper: The Greenlandic economy is driven by many different areas of production; included in this is tourism, which is constantly developing in the Arctic. How do we secure that tourism from the many cruise ships that come in and out of Greenland develops in a positive way? Is it possible to improve human behavior and understanding, combined with the interplay between visitors and the locale community?
The final of Paasisavut ended in a successful evening - with humor and academic research pervaded in a manner that made it accessible to everyone.
PhD student at Ilisimatusarfik, Nick Duelund, ended up becoming the first ever winner of Paasisavut - and we congratulate Nick on winner the contest, along with receiving the DKK 25.000 prize money, sponsored by Brugseni.
