Historic news for Greenlandic lawyers: The law degree from Ilisimatusarfik now gives access to positions as judge, lawyer and prosecutor - both in Greenland and Denmark.
The Danish Ministry of Justice has just ruled that a law degree from Ilisimatusarfik is equivalent to degrees from universities in Denmark and the Faroe Islands.
This means that graduates from Ilisimatusarfik can now apply for the same legal positions as their colleagues in the rest of the Danish Realm.
Until now, it has only been possible for lawyers educated in Denmark to be appointed as judges, lawyers or public prosecutors - also in Greenland.
This created an imbalance in the system, which is now finally being corrected.

The recognition from the Ministry of Justice in Denmark comes after several years of close dialogue, where Ilisimatusarfik's Department of Law has documented the content and quality of the law program at Ilisimatusarfik.
This is an important victory for both equality and legal certainty - and a big step for the law program in Greenland.
If you would like to know more, you are more than welcome to contact Anette Storgaard, Head of the Department of Law at Ilisimatusarfik.
