On Monday, Naalakkersuisut published a new study that provides insight into how the population assesses the judgments of the judicial system.
The study, conducted by Ilisimatusarfik by professor Anette Storgaard and law students, is based on public meetings, online questionnaires, and focus group interviews.
Participants were presented with specific cases involving, among other things, cannabis smuggling, violence, rape, child abuse, attempted murder, and manslaughter.
The report provides a picture of how difficult it is to predict a sentence based on the information available to the public - and what expectations exist regarding how sentences are handed down.
According to Anette Storgaard, the report can form a solid basis for future discussions about the legal system, criminal convictions, and the direction in which developments should go.
