RETURN - Sustainable community-oriented tourism
About
The project "Regenerative Economic Transfers for Universal Resilience in the North" (RETURN) is an international research project in tourism, supported by EU’s Northern Periphery and Arctic program (NPA).
The project will explore models for tourism taxes, visitor contributions and voluntary payments so that these revenues best support local communities, nature conservation and climate adaptation.
The project brings together academic research institutions from across the NPA region, Greenland, Iceland, Faroe Islands, Sweden, Norway, Ireland, Scotland and Finland.
The aim is to develop fair and effective systems that ensure that tourism contributes to the common good.
The project will also serve as a knowledge platform for policy makers and tourism stakeholders who want to implement sustainable tourism taxes and financing models.
With funding of €1.6 million from the EU Interreg program, the project will run for three years and contribute to the global debate on how tourism can best support local communities and the environment in the long run.
Ilismatusarfik's participant in the project is professor Gestur Hovgaard.
