In collaboration with Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq, the new research project Ilaassaagut is now initiating a comprehensive effort to address the challenges of homelessness.
Ilaassaagut is supported by a generous grant from OAK Foundation Denmark and led by Ilisimatusarfik's Centre for Arctic Welfare - and the project runs from 2024 - 2026.
The focus areas of the project include the involvement of vulnerable citizens, training of street staff and shelter staff, and the use of data analysis to strengthen the dialog with decision-makers on long-term solutions to homelessness.
"We are grateful for the significant and generous grant and support from OAK Foundation Denmark - and we look forward to creating real change in collaboration with our local communities," head of center Steven Arnfjord says.
The project's initiatives are designed to put people affected by homelessness at the heart of the project and promote independent living through role models, education and the development of relevant services. Principles of inclusion and co-ownership of their own futures will be the cornerstone of the project's approach.
The entire process will be documented to contribute to practical, long-term solutions. This will not only benefit Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq, but also inspire other municipalities to implement similar initiatives after the completion of project Ilaassaagut.
Ilisimatusarfik's Centre for Arctic Welfare will collaborate with partners and professionals to map and identify needs in the social area. There will be ongoing advice and sparring on housing first and shelter solutions - as well as organizing social summits where social vulnerability and social policy are discussed by stakeholders and people affected by homelessness.
The purpose and focus of the project is to improve social efforts and create better conditions for homeless people.
