Covid-19 update for Ilisimatusarfik
Greenland allows entry, but sets out a number of requirements for anyone wishing to enter the country.
On the Greenlandic authorities’ official website you can see what you must pay attention to before departing, test procedures, Sumut form, and how to proceed when arriving in Greenland.
Regarding Ilisimatusarfik, naturally we follow the Greenlandic authorities’ guidelines.
However, in order for Ilisimatusarfik to also do our part in terms of minimizing the Covid-19 risk in the Greenlandic society – Ilisimatusarfik’s management has decided that the following further measures be taken with immediate effect:
- All staff travel is still suspended (upon application, rector can make exemptions).
- Large events are cancelled, postponed or downgraded in scale.
- Lecturers and students arriving from outside Greenland to Ilisimatusarfik - and whom within 14 days prior to arrival have stayed in the Faroe Islands or in countries or areas which the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark define as quarantine countries - must quarantine themselves for 5 days after arrival in Nuuk and be tested for Covid-19 thereafter. If the test is negative, the quarantine is lifted.
- Online teaching is used when needed (e.g., if the lecturer is in quarantine due to the point above).
Besides these measures, Ilisimatusarfik’s general guidelines are still in effect for both campus Ilimmarfik and Ilinniarfissuaq.
On 12 June 2020, Naalakkersuisut announced that they maintain the reopening of traffic from Denmark starting Monday 15 June 2020.
On this website (in Greenlandic and Danish), you can read what you need to be aware of before departure, test procedures, Sumut-form and what to do upon arriving to Greenland.
There are still no restrictions when traveling domestically in Greenland - and face masks are only required on international flights to Greenland.
As it is a requirement to be tested on the 5th day after arrival to Greenland (and as it is not yet all places where you can be tested), some students may need to be in transit to be tested.
The Ministry of Education, Culture & Church is currently trying to get legal coverage to cover expenses for this in addition to other Covid-19 related extraordinary travel expenses for students.
Ilisimatusarfik follows the directions from the Epidemic Commission and the Greenlandic authorities - and Ilisimatusarfik's management has therefore decided to reopen from Monday 27 April 2020.
This means that teaching in all programmes etc. again will take place physically at campus Ilimmarfik and Ilinniarfissuaq from Monday 27 April 2020.
In connection with the reopening, all students, staff and guests are encouraged to follow the authorities' recommendations regarding distance, hygiene etc.
In this connection, Ilisimatusarfik has prepared some guidelines, which can be downloaded here.

All students receive detailed information from Student Services and their respective heads of departments regarding the precise plan for their educational programmes - including possible exam schedule for the month of April.
At the request of the management at Ilisimatusarfik, the library will give students an opportunity to borrow books to be used for writing assignments.
The conditions are that students send an e-mail to [email protected] and [email protected].
The librarian will then find the desired book or other material - and a time slot will be send to the student. The student will then only be able to collect the material at this specific time slot.
We start with the opportunity Wednesday 01 April 2020.

- All events are canceled or postponed.
- Students who have planned a semester abroad for the fall semester 2020 are not affected at this time - but we urge the students to regularly visit the website of The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark for updates.
- Returning students and staff who have been abroad must go into quarantine for 14 days after returning to Greenland. The guidelines of the Epidemic Commission and the Greenland authorities must be followed in this regard.
- At the same time, Ilisimatusarfik encourages all students and staff to follow the recommendations of the Epidemic Commission and the Greenlandic authorities in relation to physical contact in daily life. This means good hand hygiene - as well as avoiding handshakes, kisses and hugs.
Of course, this is a very unfamiliar situation, and it will require a lot of us all in the near future.
We will also encounter many questions that we probably do not have answers to yet - but I hope for everyone's understanding.
