New opportunities for research funding

Independent Research Fund Denmark has launched this year’s thematic calls for proposals in both Arctic research and Research on the Danish Realm.

The calls offer researchers and lecturers the opportunity to apply for funding for new projects of great societal relevance - with a clear focus on climate, security and social conditions in the North.

These are substantial funding opportunities, with grants of up to DKK 5 million (excluding overheads) available.

The application deadline for both themes is 2 September 2026.

Before writing the application, however, it is important to be aware of the general framework: Each applicant may submit only one application per year across the fund’s pools, and it is not possible to apply if one already has two or more active grants from the fund.

The two calls cover a wide range of themes. Under Arctic research, emphasis is placed, among other things, on climate change, security policy issues, and social, cultural and historical developments in Arctic societies.

Under Research on the Danish Realm, the focus is on socially relevant issues relating to Greenland, the Faroe Islands and Denmark - including questions of discrimination, equal treatment, rights, and children and young people facing social challenges. Foreign and security policy perspectives may also be included.
